Downsview Park’s Prairie Party @ Downsview Park
Jun 4 @ 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Get ready to help support one of Ontario’s most threatened ecosystems; tallgrass fields! Home to many native species and a wealth of biodiversity, tallgrass is nevertheless constantly threatened by construction and is all too often forgotten in the push for preserving other ecosystems. As a result, Downsview Park has secured five acres of space to dedicate exclusively to tall grass prairies and they’re looking forward to planting it this spring!

In addition to this planting, Downsview Park is hoping to have other information and activities available to guests when they come to this year’s Prairie Party. That includes the presence of the TBC; we’ll have an information booth near our hives at Downsview Park for people to come, ask questions, and learn how bees are an important element of the tallgrass ecosystem!

More information to be announced as the event date draws closer.

Downsview Park’s Prairie Party is an event organized by the Downsview Park Tallgrass Project, which focuses primarily on the unique ecosystem of tallgrass fields. An increasingly threatened ecosystem, the Tallgrass Project aims to preserve this ecosystem, promote biodiversity, and educate people about native species that you can find in this declining space. For more information on the Tallgrass Project, please feel free to visit Downsview Park’s Tallgrass Project page.

Propolis-etc… is pleased to offer introductory workshops for aspiring beekeepers in the spring of 2017. The courses are geared towards new beekeepers who anticipate buying a hive in the spring, or soon after, as well as beekeepers with a bit of experience who are looking for additional guidance and support.

FORMAT:

The workshop consists of both classroom time and a hands-on visit to a local apiary. Topics covered include:

  • Basic honeybee biology – bee lifecycle and roles
  • Placement of beehives, including forage/flower and plant recommendations
  • Beekeeping equipment & regulations
  • Working with a hive – inspections, management practices, seasonal responsibilities
  • Brief overview products of the hive how the bees use them
  • Harvesting and extracting honey
  • Preparing colonies for winter
  • Overview of pest & disease management
  • Next steps as a beekeeper

Each participant will receive a copy of the Ontario Beekeeping Manual. During the visit to the bee yard, basic protective clothing and tools will be provided. Participants should come prepared by wearing closed-toed footwear and long sleeved, light colored clothing. Purchasing a full bee suit is an option but is not necessary for this basic hive inspection/demonstration.

COST & REGISTRATION:

The cost of the workshop is $350. Each workshop is limited to 15 participants, on a first come, first serve basis. Registration requires a non-refundable deposit of $50. The balance of the course payment ($300) is due no later than two weeks prior to the course date.
